Tarquinia Gallery: “we wanted to contribute with our region and provide other alternatives"

The Tarquinia Gallery from Viña del Mar is going to be for first time in Ch.ACO exhibiting works by national artists, mainly from Roberto Matta, in whom they inspired to choose the name of the gallery: Tarquinia is the Italian city where de Chilean artist had his workshop. We had the chance to talk with Paulina Cubillos and Christian Jander, directors of the gallery located in the V region, about how to produce art outside Santiago and their expectations from Ch.ACO -11.

Tarquinia Gallery

What does mean for you to be in Ch.ACO for the first time?

Paulina: “Ch.ACO is presented as a way of making ourselves known, as we are from regions outside Santiago and this is a very centralized country, and the truth is it that it´s difficult to start in regions. Ch.ACO is a platform to make us known nationally and internationally. Our interest es to get contact with international galleries, so this is a really good opportunity that is presented to us”.

Christian: “Although the gallery started less than a year ago, we have been collecting art for more than 20 years, we have dedicated to collecting everything that is Latin American painting and sculpture, but our collection is focused mainly on Roberto Matta. We have been trying to complete the graphic work from Roberto Matta to expose it and make it known at a more transversal level, in universities, colleges and municipalities. We are trying is to make art more transversal“.

“People from regions have very few possibilities to exhibit their work in Santiago. The galleries in Santiago are not many and the truth is that it costs a lot, so we are trying to help the other regions"

Is the gallery called Tarquinia as a reference to Roberto Matta?

Christian: “Roberto spent a large part of his life in Italy and Tarquinia was the city where he had his workshop, so in his honor we named the gallery with that name".

How are the opportunities for art in regions?

Christian: “People from regions have very few possibilities to exhibit their work in Santiago. The galleries in Santiago are not many and the truth is that it costs a lot, so we are trying to help the other regions".

“We had a couple of galleries here in Viña that unfortunately were closing and there are not many alternatives to appreciate art, except from Valparaíso and some museums"

What motivated you to create the gallery outside Santiago?

Paulina: “We are from the region, we have been our whole life in Viña del Mar. We, as a city, play against being so close to Santiago because every need you have is solved in the capital. Precisely, we wanted to contribute with our region and give alternatives so there is no excuse to say that you have to go to Santiago. The idea is to create and create culture in Viña".

Christian: “We had a couple of galleries here in Viña that unfortunately were closing and there are not many alternatives to appreciate art, except from Valparaíso and some museums".

What is the seal of Tarquinia?

Christian: “We want that the artists to be the center of attention and not the gallery itself or the final clients. As the artist has a good communion with the gallery, the gallery can make the link with the final client".

Paulina: "and also the idea is to be a cultural contribution, basically to make exhibitions and events that are educational, now we are organizing an exhibition with the University of Valparaíso. The idea is to introduce culture, art, not be too distant, make it more universal".

"To be the first time, our expectations are to make ourselves known in a better way, to position ourselves as a gallery that is interested in promoting art and mainly that it is seen that art exists not only in Santiago, but also in regions"

How did you select the artists with whom you will come to Ch.ACO -11?

Christian: "In this period that we have been working in the gallery, we have been adding artists that we like, we are not their representatives, but we do have a fairly close relationship with them and we are developing several projects together with these artists. I think they represent us, we feel very comfortable with their way of thinking and carrying art".

What are we going to see in Ch.ACO -11?

Christian: "What we are putting together with Roberto Matta are some works of different types, oil on jute, drawings, some collages that come out a bit of Matta's traditional and also some engravings. We are going to see some Oscar Barra's oil paintings and some works by Edwin Rojas and Lorenzo Moya. We also have some surprises, we want to bring a couple of sculptures by Paola Vezzani".

What do you expect from the fair?

Christian: "To be the first time, our expectations are to make ourselves known in a better way, to position ourselves as a gallery that is interested in promoting art and mainly that it is seen that art exists not only in Santiago, but also in regions".
