Rodrigo Alonso, designer

Which place in Santiago connects you with design?

“I wouldn’t say Santiago. In general my connection with design is habitual and almost with anything. I’ve stopped thinking about design just as an aesthetic or beautifier action, design is to resolve all types of problems (...) from a lame table, a poorly made or well made chair or a color that I don’t like, in each of this daily things, I find something possible to design”.

¿Which is the relation between design and art?

“Design has many tools (...) not just geometrical, practical or functional, but also everything can be read between lines. It’s not completely scientific, geometric or engineering, is also a discipline which has a huge contribution from art and all its sensibility”.

"I believe in mix disciplines and don’t keep with you already know as a only rule, therefore, is always take a risks, if you don’t take a risk you won’t able to know how far you can go”

What inspires you?

“Finding solutions with new materials inspires me. When something doesn’t have a solution to go against it, to innovate. Innovate, challenging the system, being always breaking the rules in order to design, not just within something aesthetic, but within something can induce a new way of life and improve the quality of it”.

If you have to define your work in one word, what would it be?

“I would define as risk (...) I believe in mix disciplines and don’t keep with you already know as a only rule, therefore, is always take a risks, if you don’t take a risk you won’t able to know how far you can go”.

Art can be a great question about the society we live, about environment and the reality we have today, and Ch.ACO is achieving answer it through the years.

What means Ch.ACO for you?

“For me, Ch.ACO means the first contemporary art fair and after of it come others fairs. Art can be a great question about the society we live, about environment and the reality we have today, and Ch.ACO is achieving answer it through the years.
