The renowned Chilean artist is living the lockdown from his apartment in New York, the city where he lives and he has developed his artistic career. Here he reflects on the reality of the world today in isolation and talks about the current Chilean art scene.

About of the reality we are living all over the world: How do you see the present in the world of culture and the arts, and especially in the art market? What do you expect or think will happen?
It is a moment of reflection; we are working from a very subtle intimacy. The usual thing in the world of culture was the physical participation of its members.
In part, it is on pause. Now everything is online. I don’t know what will happen; it is still too early to refer to the future. I hope everything is more humane, both in the production of artworks and in the networks that move them and make them visible.
In terms of quarantine, how have you lived the lockdown? Have you had any particular thoughts or inspirations?
And about your creative process, has it been modified? How is it being?
I’m experiencing the lockwon from my home in New York, the place with the greatest pandemic contagion in the world. All the daily coordinates were shaken. The physical space I inhabit is more flexible, less defined and houses all my recurring worries, stimuli and fantasies. Many reflections arise that involve a dramatic questioning of the systems.
My creative process went to lockdown to another place, it seems. I can not find it. Either that, or he suffers from fierce anxiety these days. Concepts and images of the past and the present are juxtaposed very frequently. Editing is complex on the battlefield.
Today, in Chile there are foundations, curators, galleries and art fairs are contributing with solidity and specific weight to make the participation of Chilean artists more visible on the international scene.
As to the reality of the national artistic scene, how do you see the export of Chilean art? Considering your career abroad...
"Export": more than that definition, I think they are the currents that cross from your place of origin and the different scenes, making this a conversation and a contribution between one and the other.
Generally, the presence of Chilean artists on the international scene was, in large part, due to their efforts, connecting, traveling and maintaining ties with curators, galleries and institutions in the different places. Today, in Chile there are foundations, curators, galleries and art fairs are contributing with solidity and specific weight to make the participation of Chilean artists more visible on the international scene.
Related to the internationalization of artists and opportunities to make themselves known, What relevance do you think the incidence of art fairs has in this point?
Art fairs have been installed in an imperious and massive way. At the beginning, they were one more complement. Now, they have become empowered, becoming it essential for countries to identify themselves with a fair, as well as a biennial or large institutional exhibitions, with the difference fairs obey the system of the economy and are considered from that platform.
